Why would a fairly new business use its resources to help a local nonprofit? For Avery Mcfalls – owner and founder of Avery’s HVAC, a metro Atlanta heating and air company – it’s part of what he believes God wants him to do.
“I’ve got an interesting past, and God has done a lot in my life, changed my trajectory,” Avery said. “When I started this company, I dedicated it to God and I said, ‘I’m just gonna show up and do whatever you got for me to do.’ It’s been an interesting ride; we’re growing pretty rapidly. We’ve been in business for three years, and we’re up to 13 employees.
“If you knew me in what I call my past life, then you don’t know me now. I want freedom and the ability to share my testimony, so that’s what the business is being built for. I want to travel around the world and share my strength and hope with other people.”
This spirit of giving put Avery in a position to serve – and as it usually does, an opportunity to give back presented itself.
“We partner with Jerry at A New Day Construction doing all their heating and air work, and he knows how I feel about my faith. It was through him that we learned about Home Repairs Ministries,” Avery said.
Avery connected with Heather Loveridge, Home Repairs’ Executive Director.
“We had two homeowners who needed HVAC help. One was a single mom with three sons who have autism and the other was a senior adult couple who said they hadn’t had working AC in seven years,” Heather said. “The scope of both of these required an HVAC company and so I began looking for a partner. That’s when I reached out to Jerry and asked if he knew of anyone — he connected me to Avery.”
Just a few short weeks after connecting with Home Repairs, Avery’s HVAC got to work serving HRM homeowners.
“I’m so grateful for people like Avery, who know there are homeowners in need in our communities and are willing to step up and help them — just because it’s the right thing to do,” said Heather.
“Because of partners like Avery’s HVAC, who in this case are willing to donate their labor and source affordable parts, we’re able to say yes to homeowners who really need the help. To have a partner willing to help our homeowners stay warm in winter and cool in summer is a huge blessing.”
Avery’s advice to those considering giving back?
“People get tied up in the rat race, but you can’t take anything with you when you die,” he said. “My intent is just to give back what’s been freely given to me. If you don’t give back what God gives to you, then a lot of times you’ll find your blessings to be fewer and further between.
“Also, [giving back] is never at your timing. This didn’t come about when I had $500,000 in my company’s bank account; it’s never at the ‘perfect time.’ Whenever God lays it on your heart to move, you’ve got to move.”
All contributions are appreciated — by Home Repairs and the homeowners it serves.
“It truly takes a village to help our communities,” Heather said. “Partnering with Home Repairs Ministries helps ensure people can stay safe, dry, accessible and healthy in their homes, which strengthens the overall wellbeing of our communities. It’s also a great way to provide your team with meaningful opportunities to help those in need. Plus, there may be tax benefits for donations or in-kind contributions.
“We can always use more roofing, HVAC, plumbing and construction/home improvement partners who want to help — whether it’s providing the resources for a repair or helping connect us to other partners who want to give back.”
