Something was hiding in Tiffany’s home.
“I work from home, and I kept hearing something in my home but had no idea where it was coming from,” Tiffany explained.
“It was driving me crazy when I was trying to work, and my kids were freaking out.”
As she started inspecting her home to find the source of the noise, she discovered that a raccoon had taken up residence in her attic.
She also discovered wood rot and other needed repairs to her home’s exterior.
Tiffany called a company to remove the unwanted visitor, and after setting up traps for the critter, the technician also pointed out specific repairs — roof, chimney, gutters and siding — that needed to be done to keep her home safe and prevent more visitors like this.
She had already spent money on needed interior repairs last year, not knowing how extensive the exterior damage was. She thought about taking out a loan.
She wondered how long it would take to build savings to cover the repairs.
Then, she says, God brought Home Repairs Ministries into her life.
“I’d never heard of them before. I was looking online for grants or resources or anything out there. I started calling a few different numbers that popped up. When I read information about Home Repairs Ministries, I called and asked them what they do and who they are. Honestly, I didn’t know if it was even real or not,” she said.
But she soon learned the support Home Repairs provides is very real!
Home Repairs’ Project Manager, Kyle, visited Tiffany to conduct an initial inspection. He noted some exterior repairs he and Home Repairs’ volunteers could complete and scheduled volunteer days to replace the siding and rotten plywood backing, add a house wrap as a vapor barrier, secure and clean the gutters, fix a hole in the chimney and re-trim some of the doors and windows.
But the big need — a roof replacement — fell outside Home Repairs’ scope of work.
So Home Repairs’ team referred Tiffany to one of its roofing partners: Adam Blackmon at ProShield Roofing.
“When Jay Hassell with Rapid Response Plumbing referred me to Home Repairs Ministries, I knew we had to be a part of what they were doing,” Adam said. “After meeting with [Executive Director] Heather Loveridge, it seemed like a great fit and another avenue to help our community.”
Tiffany was wary of another roofing company coming, especially after feeling like previous inspectors were trying to scam her.
“Honestly, I was just terrified about getting someone to [replace] my roof,” she said. “But I felt comfortable that I had gotten a referral from Home Repairs Ministries, allowing me to trust who I got [to replace] the roof.”
And this trust was well-placed! Adam and ProShield went above and beyond to ensure Tiffany felt supported throughout the replacement process.
“I was able to step in and help finalize the insurance claim for roof replacement,” Adam explained. “Unfortunately, her policy did not allow for a full roof payment, but only the actual cash value, which meant she would be [paying] out of pocket more than just her deductible.”
Adam brought this situation to one of ProShield’s owners, and together they came up with a solution.
“We were able to offer her a great price for an upgraded shingle and financing to help her cover the gap between the insurance payout and the remaining roof cost,” Adam said.
He also worked with her insurance carrier to remedy water intrusion inside her home.
“Because HRM and ProShield worked together, she now has a beautiful, safe roof and home — without the stress of wondering how long it will take before her ceiling caves in or walls fall apart,” he said.
“Home repairs can be very expensive, and I would say the majority of people in this economy would struggle to pay for them out of pocket. So when a home needs multiple repairs at once, having organizations like HRM and ProShield to work with can make the stress of being a homeowner much more bearable.”
Throughout the repair process, Tiffany saw that Home Repairs was “doing what they could to help.” And for her, that was more than enough!
