“My husband actually grew up in our house. We’ve lived here 30 years and raised three kids here.”
This is the story of Janet and her husband, Ray. They’re one of many couples in Gwinnett County who have lived here their whole lives and dug their roots down deep.
They’ve realized, though, that things aren’t quite as golden as they used to be.
“My husband is down in his health. He can’t walk, so he uses a wheelchair,” Janet shared. “We were having to [push the wheelchair] across the grass.”

Janet and her husband leave their home frequently for doctor’s appointments, and moving his wheelchair across the rough terrain of their yard had become almost impossible.

Something had to change.
“I reached out to Gwinnett County [for help]. The young lady [on the phone] gave me some information and numbers to call — one of which was Home Repairs,” Janet said.
Home Repairs Ministries allows long-time homeowners like Janet and her husband to age safely in place and maintain independence even amid health struggles.
“I went out and talked to [the HRM volunteers]; they were all very nice. They came in, did their work and had their lunch. Shortly after that, they were done!” Janet shared. “They did a good job.”
It only took one day for Home Repairs Ministries to build a ramp for the couple, making their door, yard and car accessible to them again!

“It was a bit tricky as they have a slope in front of the house,” said Heather Loveridge, Home Repairs executive director. “Our project manager and volunteers had to dig quite a bit to level the area for the ramp. But, as I always say, we have the best volunteers — even with the heat, everyone worked hard and had a great attitude.”
“It’s made it a whole lot easier to access the car with the ramp. It was a big help to our family,” Janet said. “[We were surprised at] how fast [HRM] got it done, and all the help that showed up was amazing. It made us feel loved and that somebody cares.
“I’m very grateful for HRM because the world we live in today makes it hard to find help. I was amazed at the time and the help that actually showed up.”
At Home Repairs Ministries, it’s not just the homes that need repair; people and relationships are the ministry’s first priority — and the first step is love.
“I would just like to extend my thanks to Home Repairs Ministries,” Janet said. “We really appreciate it — thank you very much!”
