He’s one of Home Repairs’ newest board members, but he’s witnessed – and been a part of – the impact that Home Repairs Ministries has made on the community for over a decade. Read on learn more about Dave and why he’s serving on the board.
How did you first hear about Home Repairs?
Through my church, Perimeter, my next door neighbor (and former Home Repairs board member) Phil Orazi, and one of my friends who actually helped start Home Repairs with [former executive director] Harvey.
What made you want to get involved?
I just loved what Home Repairs did, so I’ve always supported and contributed to the ministry; my company has been a major sponsor for the golf tournament for years.
On a personal note, I’m turning 60 in 2023, and my dad died almost 30 years ago – but my mother was still alive until about five years ago. I just know that things sometimes need to get done around the house that don’t, so this work is near and dear to my heart. I love the fact that HRM helps elderly and underserved citizens – people who really need the help. Hopefully, it’s a testament to their faith that help can come through Home Repairs.
Why is it important to you to give back, whether with your time, money or talents?
That’s the way my parents raised me; they instilled in me that to whom much is given, much is expected. And the bottom line is we’re all given quite a bit. You don’t have to go far to see people sleeping under underpasses.
[Doing this work] makes me think of the way heaven will be: no more cancer, no more homelessness, no more mental illness. I think I should try to make some of that realistic for people here before they go to heaven.
What is your goal as a board member?
To help Home Repairs reach more people and have those people see Jesus in all of us. This work is definitely what Jesus would do.
It’s really awesome to get to expand God’s kingdom here on earth how we can. And the every day of this ministry can expand the kingdom while also making sure that roofs don’t leak.
What other community organizations are you involved in?
I was the founder of the Peachtree Ridge Youth Athletic Association in Duluth, and I ran it for around 10 years.
