Working Together to Install a Lift

Coleman in liftJulie and Don needed a solution that allowed their son to move between his bed, his wheelchair, the shower and the toilet. See more of Julie, Don and Coleman’s situation. We recommended a comprehensive solution that allowed for more freedom than Julie and Don even realized. It required, however, a complicated juggling act of several non-profits and companies. Here is what God allowed us to do.

Sawnee Grant1) We pointed them to a system of helping people with disabilities move around with a cable lift running in a track called Sure Hands®.

2) We applied and were awarded a grant from the Sawnee EMC for $5,000 which covered part of the cost of the equipment. Having gotten those pieces in place, we waited until another nonprofit made good on their grant promise to complete the funding.

Coleman project3) We began alterations in the house to provide an unobstructed ceiling so the track would go from the bedroom to the sink, toilet and tub. This included some structural changes.

4) The lift was installed by the supplier.

5) Custom wall and floor cabinets were built, finished, and installed by Padgett & Associates of Alpharetta with labor donated.

The base opens like an entertainment center with the doors folding into the sides of the cabinet, so Coleman’s wheel chair rolls comfortably under.

6) A new custom granite countertop and sink were donated and installed by Watermark Stone of Cumming.

In the photo, Mom (Julie), glides Coleman almost effortlessly into the new bathroom.

He can now be lifted from his bed to his wheelchair, or from bed directly to the bathroom in the care of his Sure Hands. He grows stronger as he learns to “walk” himself while suspended from the track. Check out the video - guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Easter was a perfect time to share why we serve with the family.
