Start a Home Repair Service Ministry in Your Church

Odds are, if you are reading this, you have at least some level of interest in starting a service ministry, and maybe even a home repair ministry specifically. Maybe you were intimidated or did not have a clue where to start. Well, our organization, Home Repairs Ministries, Inc., has been doing home repair ministry for many years now. In this article, we will share our experience in starting up a ministry. The good news is that there is not a lot you actually need to begin, but like many things your success will be determined by your planning and attention to detail.

The first, critical step –

Proverbs 16:9 "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps."

I have to admit that I far too often don't take this to heart like I should, but it is always a great idea to pray for direction from God and seek guidance from His Word. See whom God says we should serve and if the abilities and spiritual gifts He has given you match what you desire to do. Mercy and service are two key spiritual gifts when it comes to home repairs ministry. The Lord can certainly call you to step out in faith with a new ministry but more than likely you will be most impactful in a ministry aligned with your spiritual gifts, skills and abilities.

Also running your idea, dream and/or vision by a godly leader (perhaps someone involved in your church's missions or outreach ministry) or person(s) in your church who will give you honest feedback is a good idea. Someone who knows you well will like have great perspective on whether this is a good step for the church, the community and you.

Assuming that your reflection, prayer and feedback take you to the next step (welcome to the team!), here are the minimum entrance requirements for a home repairs ministry.

What you need to start –

A home repair team, in the most rudimentary form, needs very few things:

  • A couple of people who want to use their knowledge and skills in construction-related ministry
  • A project or several projects requiring volunteers
  • A method of funding materials

Anything larger than "a couple of guys" requires some level of organization or things can get chaotic quickly. At that point, you will need to:

  • Identify a team leader
  • Determine a method of distributing information to the volunteer team (meeting, email, website, etc.)
  • Develop a plan to distribute information to supporters and let potential "clients" know about the ministry
  • Create a database or tracking mechanism for projects and volunteers
  • Build a volunteer pool over time and a plan to manage and develop your volunteers
  • Establish guidelines for carrying out the ministry need, including safety, types of projects the team can/cannot handle, scope, financial need of clients, etc.
  • Foster communication between the team and church leadership so that all are kept abreast of the ministry development and progress
  • Develop an accountability system to ensure that the spiritual aspect of serving on a home repairs team is being included, and so that there is proper follow up and quality control for completing projects.
