News & Updates

Putting Action into Compassion

*Unite!'s Compassion in Action Weekend arrives October 6 & 7. Have you signed up for a project yet? Click the graphic.

*Since Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, we have assisted with numerous relief trips. It has been increasingly hard to attract volunteers to go, again. This year, to remind us of the need and vast opportunities to serve, we will be constructing frames for houses in church parking lots over CIA Weekend. Those walls will then be trucked to Pass Christian, MS for assembly.

*Following CIA Weekend, you have an opportunity to take a "tool trip" to MS to erect the houses we framed the weekend before. See "Spend a Long Weekend.." below.

*Often projects come to us very late. If you have the flexibility to work on 1 or 2 day notice, we'd like to email you about them. Let us know you want to be on the list.

CIA Weekend Project Information

The Unite! website is a good starting point for viewing and signing up for service projects - click on the logo above or go to www.UniteUs.org . From that homepage is a series of links that takes you to the Hands on Atlanta website where Unite! is registering volunteers this year. Here is a sampling of those projects:

  • Remove and replace windows in Doraville
  • Finishing up and cleaning up long-term project in Stone Mountain
  • Annual yard cleanup for widow in Alpharetta
  • Handicap ramp in Tucker
  • Closet expansion in Duluth
  • Katrina wall framing in Duluth
  • Construct church lobby toy donation boxes for the Christmas drive
  • Concrete walkway in Duluth

Your prayers are very important. We've seen God do some surprising things lately and we attribute that to earnest prayer.

Our regular listings of projects at our site are suspended for October Events.

Assembling Houses - October 11-14

Ten houses are being framed (4 of these will be framed by churches recruited by HRM) on October 6th in parking lots. MANY volunteers are being sought to erect the walls and place the trusses and decking.

We plan to send a group down on Wednesday, October 10 during the day, and another on Thursday the 11th after work. Friday and Saturday are the big days for the Building Blitz. Teams leave for home on Sunday a.m. after worship.

Accommodations are air conditioned temporary structures and meals are included. Your only expenses should be sharing gas money (and/or driving) and food during travel. Please contact Harvey at 404.964.6681, right away, if you might be available. You are needed.

Funding for the cost of the lumber & shipping for the house projects is still being raised. Each house is about $11,500. If you can't go, how about buying some materials? This isn't in the budget! One major reason to do the framing in Atlanta is to get the attention of volunteers and donors. Do we have yours?

Where We've Been Serving

Breaking a Sweat in August

August saw HRM involved in two hot project days. First was a handicap ramp for a family in Lilburn caring for their grade school-aged son with cerebral palsy. We worked with our friends at Assisting the Needs for the Disabled. By having the freedom to go from the deck to the yard, he can spend more time with his new puppy.

Near the end of August, we have traditionally provided an opportunity for men to serve during the free afternoon of their Annual Retreat. This year, we had a big crew at a ministry house renovation. Among the tasks were installing ceiling fans and painting inside (air conditioned!). Another group was closing up a water problem on a house (not air conditioned!). Our contacts in Harris County (near Calloway Gardens) look forward to our arrival each year as we assist them in addressing their community needs.

God's Best for You this Month,
