May 2014 Newsletter - Mobility and Accessibility: A Huge Kingdom Opportunity

2009 Wheelchair RampElsewhere in the May eNewsletter, we shared Ashley’s story. The challenges she was facing getting around the house are unfortunately far from unique. In fact, May has been declared National Mobility Awareness Month to make people aware of some of the options that exist for the many people facing these home accessibility and mobility challenges.

The need for solutions is becoming more urgent. With people living longer and the Baby Boomers starting to retire, diseases, accidents, and strokes are creating a growing need for accessible, safe housing.

Here are some statistics that illustrate the need and opportunity. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 19% of the civilian non-institutionalized population had a disability in 2010. In aggregate, disabled people are the largest minority group in the country, coming in at around 56.7 million. 38.3 million have a severe disability*. While not all of these people need the services that HRM provides, the statistics show a dramatic and urgent need that supporters and volunteers are helping meet.
