Helping the Johnsons with a Court Citation

Johnson ProjectJesus introduced His ministry reading in a synagogue from Isaiah (chapter 61) about good news and releasing captives. We brought good news to an elderly couple, the Johnsons, in 2013. They were cited for house upkeep issues and were heading toward a hearing with the judge when we got word.

We became advocates for them in court, to release them from a fine they couldn’t afford, by offering to take on the work. Were I their neighbor, I would surely understand why the citation was given, but we took the opportunity to bear someone else’s burden in the name of Jesus. Praise God! And they are professing Christians, too!

So what happened? HRM and several churches intervened to do the work and try and get the citation thrown out. Gwinnett County Senior Services and their supporting non-profit funded the project.

We can now joyfully report that the citation against them has been thrown out by the judge. In fact, according to the homeowner, the judge had a lot of good things to say about the work that was done.

Here is a summary of the services HRM was privileged to offer:

  • Removed gutters, replaced a lot of rotten wood and 1,000+ feet of wood siding
  • Pressure washed, primed as needed, and painted the whole house
  • Trimmed trees obstructing drivers’ vision & other miscellaneous items

See all the “Before” and “After” pictures below. It’s really quite striking! Thanks to all of the churches that helped provide relief to the family:

  • 12Stone Church - Planning & Repairs
  • Mountain Park United Methodist Church - Repairs, Painting & Cleanup
  • Old Peachtree Presbyterian Church - Painting Prep & Pressure washing
  • Perimeter Church - Repairs, Painting & Cleanup
  • Victory World Church - Painting
