December Newsletter 2A - A Widow Struggling to Breathe Gets a Home Repair and The Good News

Maxine is a late 70-something Jewish widow. As I’m writing this, I literally just hung up the phone with her. About a week ago, we replaced her ceiling fan with a reversible one to blow the warm air out of her tray ceiling down around her bed. Maxine has several lung/respiratory problems and is tethered to an oxygen machine in the living room night and day.

Preparing to leave, I offered to pray for her and she admitted her fears about the future. We talked about what it is that I believe that Jesus has done for those who believe, and she was open but showed only a spark of interest. With her faith background, I knew I had to be very careful, but not go “politically correct”.

Asking how she was today, Maxine said, “Better than the alternative.”  I almost apologetically told her about my sense of assurance, and that God has made promises for what lies beyond this life, based on the what Christ has done. She made it pretty clear that this was not the moment for me to push that direction. Would you pray for her? We’ll be going back for some odds and ends soon. Pray that God’s Spirit would be drawing her and that, before the alternative arrives, she will make a decision based on God’s promises for a bright tomorrow in Christ.

The coming of Jesus really is Good News. Luke 2:10 - And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 4:43 "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose." Acts 8:12  “. . . they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ . . .”
